Who Owns Snapchat? | Evan Spiegel & Bobby Murphy

Snapchat is a multimedia messaging app that offers amazing features with secured privacy to its users. More than 265 million people on the Internet use Snapchat on a daily basis.

If you happen to be one of them, I bet this question has at least crossed once on your mind, “Who Owns Snapchat?”

Unlike many other social media apps, Snapchat is not owned by a single person. Snapchat is owned by a camera company called Snap Inc, which was founded back in 2011.

Though a camera company, Snap, owns Snap Inc. (formerly Snapchat Inc.) the concept of Snapchat was built by three university friends, Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown. Later, these people established a company named Snapchat Inclusive (was renamed Snap. Inc in 2016) and shared the ownership there.

After going through different twists and turns, Snapchat went public in 2017.

Note: Facebook, Google, Apple proposed to acquire Snapchat in the past, but they were denied. They do not have any sort of ownership on Snapchat.

Who Owns Snapchat?

Though many people carry the misconception that Snapchat is owned by a single person, the truth is something different. You see, Snapchat could not be where it is today if it were possessed by a single person. The combined efforts of the Snapchat creators brought a revolutionary change to Snapchat.

I see you noticed I haven’t answered who owns Snapchat yet. Snapchat is owned by an American camera and social media company Snap Inc.(Formerly called Snapchat Inc.)

The creators of Snapchat, Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown, founded a camera company in 2011 while relaunching Picaboo as Snapchat. They named the company Snapchat Inc and shared the possession in the company.

Snap Inc.

Snap Inc., the owner of Snapchat, is an American camera and multimedia company. Three Stanford University friends founded it; Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown.

While these three were working together on a university program together, Reggie Brown, a co-owner of Snapchat, came up with the idea of disappearing messages. He thought of creating an app that vanishes the pictures and videos once the recipient views it. All three of them worked together, collectively formed an app, and named it “Picaboo.”

Snap Inc. is the parent company of Snapchat and holds the responsibility of the development, maintenance, and updates.
